Reading

Reading is taught through phonics, Guided Reading sessions and Literacy lessons. Please see below for further information on these. We also allow for cross curricular opportunities as part of our afternoon learning and 'themed' lessons.

We are keen to develop a pleasure for reading at Ribbleton Avenue Infant School and each class has a special library/reading area which the children can access each day. We also have a larger school library and each week, classes visit the library and select their own book to take home alongside their home reading books. Each week, staff read to the children for enjoyment at the end of the day and during milk times, with Year 2 enjoying longer class novels.

Please visit class pages for further information.

Writing

Writing is taught as part of our daily Literacy lessons and we cover a range of texts, genres and units of work. Literacy lessons follow a 'talk 4 write' themed approach of imitation, innovation and invention and often begin with an engaging hook for the children. During writing lessons, the children create their own success crtieria and use our symbols from the marking and feedback policy to enhance their writing.

Please see our Literacy overviews and class pages for more information.

Phonics

For phonics teaching, we use our phonics programme which has been developed for each phase based on 'letters and sounds' phonics and sound families. Phonics takes place every day and children are taught in differentiated ability groups within their year groups.

Phonics in our school is always fast paced and engaging. The children revisit previously taught phonemes and tricky words. They are then taught new phonemes and spend time practising and applying these with reading and spelling activities.

Please see our phonics programme and class pages for further information.

Guided Reading

Guided reading takes place from Reception to Year 2. Children are grouped according to reading ability and read with the teacher once each week. During guided reading, the children focus on phonics, reading and comprehension skills. There is detailed discussion about the text and vocabulary. In Year 2, children also complete follow on activities to further develop their comprehension skills.

Handwriting

We have developed a unique school progression overview for handwriting and also use the PenPals programme as a tool to support the teaching of handwriting.

Handwriting is taught to all children from Reception to Year 2 each week. Classes have 1-2 15 minute sessions per week, with the sole focus being handwriting. This can include sitting correctly, pencil grip and letter formation.

Please see below for Handwriting Overview.

Please note that texts may differ slightly each year depending upon themed cycles, however units, objective and outcomes will remain the same. Please see class pages for more information.

Maths

We have developed our own unique Maths teaching overview from the National Curriculum programmes of study and White Rose Maths. Our overview shows the teaching sequence and ensures all objectives are covered across the year. Throughout each unit of learning the children will have opportunities to apply their knowledge and deepen their mathematical understanding and problem solving skills.
