Welcome to Kingfishers

I would like to say a warm welcome to the Kingfishers class and Year 2. We are a class of 29 children.

The class teacher is Mrs Agnew and the teaching assistants are Mrs Bolt and Mrs Khanporia.

Our PE lessons are every Monday and Friday this half term so please ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school and that we are not wearing earrings on those days.

Homework is given out on a Friday and it is due in no later than the following Wednesday. Homework will consist of a piece of English or Maths work and it will be linked to what we have been learning about in class. Encourage your child to complete their homework themselves as it is important to allow them to become more independent learners.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and the children will be tested on them the following Friday. Please help us to learn these so we can get them all right!

We really like reading in Kingfishers so we ask our grown ups to listen to us read and comment in our reading diaries so that we can get our book changed – just a small comment and signature is fine. Books will be changed in class on; Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If your child is ready to change their reading book they must place it in the basket ready to be changed.

Our Learning

Autumn 2

We will begin this half term by focussing on instruction wrting and making halloween pizzas! We will then move onto adventure stories and learn all about the popualr story 'Alice in Wonderland'. We will be doing lots of descriptive writing using adjectives and also debating on what we think Alice should do. We will build up to writing our very own story in the style of this book.

In our maths work we will look at a range of subjects including number and place value, measurement, shape, money, addition and subtraction and LOTS more. We will really concentrate on problem solving and word problems and will be using our understanding of jottings etc to help us. At home try and practice your sticks and dots!

Theme – Peeking into the past

Our theme for this half term is 'Peeking into the past'. This theme will look into the victorian era and learn about Queen Victoria. In this theme we will focus on history, learning about what it was like in the past. We will also look at different victorian recipes and make our own victoria sponge cake.

Science – Living Things

Living things is our topic for autumn 2. In this science unit we will learn about things that are living, never lived and dead. We will learn about food chains and learn new vocabualrly linked with that, such as, carnivores. We will also carry out an exciting science experiement!

In RE, we are learning all about Christianity and thinking about the story of christmas.

This half-term we will be focussing og gymnastics and also athletics in PE.
