Kingfishers

Welcome to Kingfishers

I would like to say a warm welcome to the Kingfishers class and Year 2. We are a class of 27 children.

The class teacher is Mrs Agnew and the teaching assistants are Mrs Bolt, Mrs Khanporia and Miss Slee.

Our PE lessons are every Thursday and Friday this half term so please ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school and that we are not wearing earrings on those days.

Homework is given out on a Friday and it is due in no later than the following Wednesday. We have changed our homework so that it links to our new themed learning and is more exciting for the children. Each half term we will introduce a new theme and the homework will have a number of different activities for the children to choose from. They will not need to do all of the activities, they can pick which one they would like to do each week. Please tick the activity when it has been completed. Where possible, it can be stuck in their homework book or handed in to class. Some activities may just be a talking activity or some may be a visit somewhere so please just tick these when completed.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and the children will be tested on them the following Friday. Please help us to learn these so we can get them all right!

We really like reading in Kingfishers so we ask our grown ups to listen to us read and comment in our reading diaries so that we can get our book changed – just a small comment and signature is fine. Books will be changed in class on; Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If your child is ready to change their reading book they must place it in the basket ready to be changed.

Our Learning

|

Spring 2

English

This half term we will be learning about explanation texts, non chronological reports and poems. We will be learning and reciting some Spring poems and locate features including rhyming words. We we also celebrate World Book Day and focus on the story 'Otto Blotter, bird spotter'. This story is all about a bird spotter called Otto who likes going on adventures.

We will then be learning more about Explanation Texts, improving our writing and using features such as present tense and using lots of different conjunctions! Our learning will also include non chronological reports where we will explore different features and sentence openers and research all about castles. We will end this unit by creating a fascinating report all about castles!

Mathematics

In our maths work we will look at a range of subjects including number and place value, division and multiplication, shape, fractions and LOTS more. We will really concentrate on problem solving and word problems and will be using our understanding of jottings etc to help us. We will gain more confidence when solving reasoning problems and develop the ability to say how we know that answer and discuss our strategies.

Theme – Castles, knights and dragon.

Our theme for this half term is 'Castles, knights and dragons' This is a really exciting theme as it was chosen completely by the children and capturing their interests. We will learn all about castles and the features of castles. We will explore castles times and the jobs people had within the castles. We will also learn about St George and understand why he is significant to Englands history and St Georges day. In art we will design and make dragon eyes out of clay! We will sketch a dragon eye first and then use different techniques to add pattern and textures to the clay.

Science – Green Fingers

Green fingers is our theme in science for this half term. We will plant a bean plant in class in different conditions and without basic needs (no sunlight, no water) and see which is the best way for a plant to grow. We will also grow a class sunflower and care and look after it all half term.

RE

In RE, we are learning all about Islam. We will learn about the rituals and prayers in Islam and reflect on how we show gratitude.

PE

PE this half term will be dance with the PNE coach on a Thursday and games on a Friday.
